Prostitution is legal in Bangladesh. But the living conditions of prostitutes are inhumane.
In the brothels of Fadipur, Daulatdia or the island of Baniashantia, prostitutes are forced to live in shacks or rooms in old buildings. In Fadipur there are more than 900 prostitutes in two large brothels, one in the city center and one along the river. More than 1500 in the brothel Daulatdia and more than 200 in the island-brothel Baiashantia. Many of them are underage, daughters or grandchildren of former prostitutes. Many others have been disappointed with the false promise of a job in the city. Forced to have more than 10 sexual relation a day to pay off their debts, the girls become slaves of their pimps. When after many years and after paying their debts become free, they have no other place to go and have no other work to do in order to live.
